Your City. Your Vote.
November 5th

A historic election.

The 2024 General Election is a historic election for Portland and Multnomah County. For the first time, voters will select candidates using ranked-choice voting. This will also be the first general election since Portland voters passed historic charter amendments.

Thanks to these charter amendments, we have the opportunity to elect a more representative Portland City Council than ever before. With four voting districts, three councilors in each district, and a robust small donor match program, Portlanders have a lot of great candidate choices and some important decisions to make.

Your vote matters more now than ever before.

Why Local Elections Matter

Ballots are due November 5

Oregon is a vote-by-mail state. Your Oregon ballot will be mailed to voters around October 15. Ballots should be returned to an Official County Dropbox by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Ballots mailed back must be postmarked on or before Election Day.

For more information, visit the County’s election website.

Portland voters can rank up to six candidates in four new districts

Portland voters approved expanding the city council to 12 members and voting to elect three candidates for each of the four districts. Voters also will use ranked-choice voting to select their candidates, which means voters can rank candidates in order of preference instead of selecting only one candidate.

To determine who wins, votes are counted in a series of rounds. In each round, one of two things happens: either a winning candidate is identified and elected, or the candidate in last place is eliminated, and voters who ranked that candidate as their first choice will have their votes counted for their next choice.
